You’ll be eager to put those barbecuing skills to good use, but don’t overlook your safety and that of your family. Here are a few simple tips to ensure a safe culinary experience!

1. Regularly check over your barbecue:
   • make sure the gas or propane feed is closed;
   • clean the elements and make sure they’re still in good shape (if you notice any obstructions, clean or replace them); and
   • wipe soapy water over the hoses and connections and check for bubbling once you open the gas or propane feed, keeping the burner switches off, of course. If you notice bubbling, have the part repaired by a professional.

2. Regularly clean your grill and empty the grease container under the BBQ to avoid any build-up.
   Use a barbecue brush with non-metal bristles to ensure they don’t fall off and stick to your food, and accidentally get swallowed, causing internal injuries. Your accessories must also have long enough handles so you don’t burn yourself.

3. Set up your barbecue well away from any combustibles (tree, house, balcony, play area, umbrella, etc.).
   Also, consider that siding on houses can be easily damaged or catch fire. Check your municipal by-laws for distance requirements.

4. Check your propane tank for corrosion or leaks.
   Before putting it into a vehicle, make sure the valve is completely shut. Always store it upright and steady in a well-ventilated space.

5. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation, and never leave your barbecue on unattended. Always turn off your propane or natural gas valve whenever you finish using your barbecue.
