Exciting for some, unsettling for others, going back to school means getting back into a routine and, more often than not, a race against the clock! “Healthy” lunch boxes, properly adjusted backpacks, compliance with the new school’s dress codes, homework, extracurricular activities… If we add to all that a move into a new house in a new neighbourhood, then there’s even more to think about.

FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET AROUND YOUR NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

In a new environment, every family member will need to figure out new ways of getting around. You will probably have to check out a few options before settling on a morning routine that takes everyone’s different schedules into account. In your new neighbourhood, your children may have to attend a new school. Think about taking a tour around the neighbourhood with the family. Even before they start school, take them there for a chance to play in the school yard. Make the trip with your kids on foot, or by bike: this may seem totally unimportant, but it could give them a lot of confidence. If you have teens using public transportation, or if you do to get to work, check your local bus service to find the new schedule. Some may be changed in the summer, but if so, they are usually back on the regular schedule by mid-August. Also, be sure to figure out whether there are any park-and-rides on your way.

MAKING THE MOST OF EVERY DAY IN YOUR NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD

When you’ve just moved, returning home after a day at work can be a stressful moment for parents, with so much to do at once! To avoid the mad dash to the fridge and pantry, maybe put a few vegetables and fruits or cheese on the counter. This will sustain everyone, and give you a chance to catch up on everyone’s day and get supper ready. And while everyone is gathered in the kitchen, ask them to help prepare their lunches for the following day. That way, they will not have to mess up the kitchen again later in the evening, and you can instead go out and take advantage of all that your new neighbourhood has to offer, such as parks, the local ice cream parlour, bike paths, or a block party.

ORGANIZE YOUR NEW HOME EFFICIENTLY FOR GOING BACK TO SCHOOL

In your new house or your new condo, try to set up a quiet corner for homework. You children will be able to concentrate and use all the tools they need to do their homework without having to run around looking for a missing pencil sharpener! Above all, no clutter in this place of choice for homework.

After meeting your neighbours and getting to know your new environment, think about arranging meetings and service contracts with local businesses, such as the car repair shop, the veterinary clinic, or the snow removal contractor. And while you’re at it, make arrangements for the regular maintenance of your natural gas appliances if you live in a serviced neighbourhood. All of this will eventually get worked into your routine and enable you to comfortably settle into the approaching cocooning season.
